Spacetime Is Emergent
[CONVICTION]
The most radical discovery in 21st-century physics is that spacetime -- the arena within which all physics supposedly unfolds -- is not fundamental. It is derivative. Constructed. Emergent from something deeper that has no spatial location, no temporal sequence, and no internal differentiation. As Nathan Seiberg of the Institute for Advanced Study put it: "I am almost certain that space and time are illusions. These are primitive notions that will be replaced by something more sophisticated."
This is not fringe speculation. It is where the amplituhedron, ER=EPR, loop quantum gravity, twistor theory, and causal set theory independently converge. And it is -- with a precision that demands attention -- what Advaita Vedanta has stated for over a millennium: Brahma Satyam Jagan Mithya. Reality is consciousness; the world of space and time is appearance.
The Amplituhedron: Geometry Without Spacetime
[EVIDENCE]
In December 2013, Nima Arkani-Hamed and Jaroslav Trnka introduced the amplituhedron -- a geometric object in higher-dimensional mathematical space whose volume encodes particle interaction probabilities without any reference to spacetime, locality, or unitarity. Where Feynman diagrams require hundreds of pages tracking virtual particles through space and time, the amplituhedron computes the same answers as a single geometric volume. Locality and unitarity are not inputs but consequences of geometric positivity.
Arkani-Hamed's philosophical precision: "The object is basically timeless." His program envisions a single mathematical structure describing "the entire past, present and future of everything in some timeless, autonomous way."
The amplituhedron initially applied only to a toy theory (N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills). By 2023-2024, surfaceology -- a formalism computing scattering amplitudes by drawing curves on surfaces -- extended the program to realistic particles including pions and gluons. It contains string theory and shows hints of gravity. Jacob Bourjaily: "Whether it's going to get rid of space-time, I don't know. But it's the first time I've seen a door."
Arkani-Hamed's image: exploring a jungle in search of a rumored castle, having so far found two marble statues -- the amplituhedron and surfaceology. "How could the castle itself not be out there?"
ER=EPR: Entanglement Weaves Spacetime
[EVIDENCE]
Juan Maldacena and Leonard Susskind's 2013 ER=EPR conjecture: Einstein-Rosen bridges (wormholes) and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement are the same physical phenomenon. Whenever two systems are quantum-entangled, they are connected by a wormhole. The geometric fabric of spacetime is literally woven from threads of quantum entanglement.
Mark Van Raamsdonk's 2010 thought experiment -- initially rejected by multiple journals, now one of the decade's most influential papers -- demonstrated that reducing entanglement between two halves of a quantum system stretches the connecting spacetime "like pulling taffy" until it snaps. "If you take away the entanglement, your space-time just falls apart."
Brian Swingle showed tensor networks (describing entanglement patterns) naturally produce the geometry of Anti-de Sitter space, and that a geometry built from entanglement "has to obey the gravitational equations of motion." Einstein's field equations are not fundamental laws but consequences of entanglement distribution.
The deepest implication inverts quantum "weirdness": if entanglement creates spacetime, then non-locality is not the anomaly -- spatial separation is the emergent, constructed phenomenon. Entanglement seems "spooky" only because we mistake the derivative (space) for the fundamental (entanglement). As Rasmus Jaksland argued in Synthese, entanglement may be the true "world-making relation" from which distance itself is derived.
Time Dissolves
[EVIDENCE]
Multiple independent routes arrive at the same conclusion: time is not fundamental.
Rovelli's thermal time hypothesis (with Alain Connes): time is a macroscopic statistical artifact emerging from our ignorance of microscopic details, the way temperature emerges from molecular motion. "Time is ignorance." The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for quantum gravity contains no time variable. At the fundamental level, the universe is static. Rovelli: "The absence of time does not mean that everything is frozen. It means that the incessant happening that wearies the world is not ordered along a timeline."
Loop quantum gravity (Rovelli and Smolin): space is granular -- discrete quanta described by spin networks with minimum area roughly 10^-70 m^2. Space is fabric: smooth from a distance, threaded at close inspection.
Penrose's twistor theory (1967): spacetime geometry emerges from twistor space, a complex four-dimensional arena where spacetime points are secondary, derived objects. A point in spacetime corresponds to a line in twistor space. The hierarchy is inverted.
Barbour's timeless physics: only instantaneous configurations ("Nows") exist. Time is an illusion created by matter configurations encoding apparent records of a past.
The block universe from relativity: past, present, and future exist equally. Einstein's relativity of simultaneity makes the "flow" of time observer-dependent and therefore not a property of reality itself.
Wheeler, Wolfram, and the Participatory Universe
[EVIDENCE]
John Wheeler reached the most radical formulation: "It from bit." Every particle, field, and spacetime continuum "derives its function, its meaning, its very existence entirely from answers to yes-or-no questions, binary choices, bits." His participatory universe places observation at the constitutive center: "We are participators in bringing into being not only the near and here but the far away and long ago." When challenged, Wheeler confessed: "I do take 100 percent seriously the idea that the world is a figment of the imagination."
Stephen Wolfram's Physics Project proposes the most computationally explicit substrate: an evolving hypergraph of abstract relations from which space, time, and matter emerge. Space is large-scale connectivity pattern; time is computational process; particles are "little lumps of space" with topological stability. Wolfram's deepest move is his observer theory: different forms of consciousness could literally perceive different laws of physics.
Bohm's Implicate Order
[REFRAME]
David Bohm's implicate/explicate order framework provides the most developed bridge concept. The implicate order is the deeper, enfolded reality where "everything is enfolded into everything" -- space and time no longer dominant organizational principles. The explicate order is the unfolded, manifest world. The holomovement -- the undivided totality -- is primary.
Bohm's decades of dialogue with Krishnamurti explored this at the physics-contemplation intersection. Krishnamurti: "Your consciousness is not yours; it is the ground on which all human beings share." Bohm's implicate order gave this claim mathematical structure: time is "a projection of multidimensional reality into a sequence of moments."
The Vedantic Mirror
[REFRAME]
The structural parallel between emergent spacetime and Vedantic maya is not vague. It is point-for-point precise. See physics-vedanta-convergence for the full mapping.
The Mandukya Upanishad's description of turiya -- "unseen, beyond the reach of ordinary transaction, ungraspable, without distinguishing marks, unthinkable, indescribable, one whose essence is the perception of itself alone" -- negates every attribute physicists deny to the pre-spacetime layer. Kashmir Shaivism specifies the mechanism: space and time emerge as kanchukas (contractions) placed on infinite consciousness. Kala contracts eternity into succession. Niyati contracts omnipresence into locality. This is structurally identical to the physics claim that spacetime is emergent, with the additional precision of specifying what consciousness contracts from.
Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika performs for Buddhist philosophy what the amplituhedron does for particle physics: systematically demonstrates that nothing possesses svabhava (intrinsic, independent existence). Rovelli discovered this resonance independently: "Nagarjuna has given us a formidable conceptual tool for thinking about the relationality of quanta."
The Founders Knew
[STORY]
The convergence is not a modern invention. Schrodinger's lifelong engagement with Advaita Vedanta (beginning around 1918 through Schopenhauer and Paul Deussen's translations) produced: "The total number of minds in the universe is one." Heisenberg, after conversations with Rabindranath Tagore (1929), realized "there was, in fact, a whole culture that subscribed to very similar ideas." Bohr designed his coat of arms with the yin-yang symbol and the motto Contraria sunt complementa. Pauli and Jung developed the concept of unus mundus -- one world beneath both matter and mind.
This is not cherry-picked mysticism. It is the documented intellectual trajectory of the founders of modern physics, arriving at positions their materialist successors have spent a century trying to explain away.
Implications for the Mesocosm
[CONVICTION]
If spacetime is emergent, then the physical world is not the ground floor. The exterior-intelligence framework's value landscapes (V) are not topographies painted onto a physical substrate. They are structure in something more fundamental -- information, consciousness, or whatever the pre-spacetime layer turns out to be. Hoffman's Conscious Agent Theory and the amplituhedron share mathematical objects (decorated permutations), suggesting that the agents navigating landscapes and the pre-spacetime geometry may be aspects of the same thing.
This reframes the Mesocosm's entire practical program. Designing better civilizational infrastructure is not engineering on top of dead matter. It is shaping the patterns through which consciousness manifests. The distinction between "physical" and "spiritual" design dissolves -- there is only design that is more or less aligned with the structure of what is actually real.
