Donald Hoffman

Cognitive scientist at UC Irvine who has built the most explicit mathematical bridge between the physics of emergent spacetime and the Vedantic concept of Maya. Where most consciousness researchers stay within either the scientific or the philosophical tradition, Hoffman moves between them with formal proofs.

  • Fitness Beats Truth theorem: Using evolutionary game theory, proves that natural selection generically drives veridical (truth-tracking) perceptions to extinction. The probability that natural selection would shape sensory systems to report true properties of objective reality is zero. We evolved perception for fitness, not accuracy.
  • Interface Theory of Perception: Space, time, and physical objects are a "desktop" -- icons optimized for survival that hide the underlying reality. "Physical objects are simply icons in that desktop." The desktop metaphor is not an analogy; it is the formal consequence of the FBT theorem applied to all sensory modalities.
  • Conscious Agent Theory: A conscious agent is a six-tuple that experiences, decides, and acts. Agents combine into larger agents, all the way to infinity. The objective world consists of conscious agents and their experiences; physical objects are icons in species-specific interfaces.
  • Amplituhedron connection: His 2023 Entropy paper with Chetan Prakash establishes that the Markovian dynamics of conscious agents map onto decorated permutations -- the same mathematical objects encoding scattering amplitudes in the amplituhedron framework. His conjecture: "A particle in spacetime is a projection of the Markovian dynamics of a communicating class of conscious agents."

The Vedanta Connection

Hoffman makes this explicit, not as metaphor but as identification: "Various spiritual traditions have said for a long time that space-time and what we call the physical world isn't fundamental. It's maya, or an illusion. They're on to something." And his most ambitious claim: "We can actually now have a mathematically precise spirituality where we can have theorems and proofs about conscious agents that are infinite."

The FBT theorem formalizes maya as mathematics. If perception is a fitness-tuned interface rather than a window on truth, then the phenomenal world of objects, space, and time is -- in precise technical terms -- a constructed appearance. Shankara's rope-snake analogy (a rope mistaken for a snake in dim light) becomes a formal consequence of evolutionary dynamics: organisms that see the rope (truth) are outcompeted by organisms that see whatever triggers the right behavioral response (fitness icon).

The conscious agent framework formalizes the Vedantic hierarchy: individual conscious agents (jiva) combine into universal consciousness (Brahman) through the same Markovian dynamics that generate spacetime as a projected interface (maya). This is not vague resonance. The mathematical objects are shared.

Role in the Mesocosm

Hoffman occupies a critical position in the book's argument. The exterior-intelligence framework describes agents navigating value landscapes. Hoffman's work asks: what are those landscapes made of? If spacetime is a species-specific desktop, then the landscapes agents navigate are not physical substrates but structures in a deeper layer -- one that his Conscious Agent Theory identifies with consciousness itself.

The connection to spacetime-is-emergent is direct: the amplituhedron computes particle interactions in a timeless geometry; Hoffman's conscious agents generate spacetime as a projected interface from their Markovian dynamics; both use decorated permutations as mathematical substrate. The physics and the consciousness theory share formal structure.

Hoffman also connects the deflationary-cascade: as technology makes the material layer cheaper (the desktop icons more manipulable), the deeper layer -- consciousness, meaning, purpose -- becomes the primary frontier. If the desktop is not reality, then mastering the desktop is necessary but not sufficient. The Mesocosm's practical program (abundance infrastructure) handles the desktop; the consciousness program asks what lies behind it.
